The poster features the silver adornment worn by a woman in Setu folk costume – a large conical brooch, surrounded by chains of silver coins and pieces. Such ornamental abundance is unique in Estonia.

The Setu people are a small ethnic minority living in South-East Estonia. For centuries, they have lived between two worlds with Orthodox Russia in the east and formerly Catholic, but now Lutheran, Estonia in the west. The language, customs and folk costumes of the Setu people have influences from both sides. Above all, however, they have kept their own regional distinctiveness. The Setu language is one of many South-Estonian dialects and is not usually understood by people from North-Estonia. The Setu folk costumes bear both Russian and ‘Finno-Ugric’ elements (the term ‘Finno-Ugric’ describes the Estonian, Finnish and Hungarian languages and the cultures in which they have been spoken). Setu culture was in decline in the 1980s and symbolised a potentially dark future for Estonians and Estonian culture under Soviet rule.

Most people are unaware that symptoms of heart attacks in females are different than those of males. Please signal boost. (Based on this post, information from WebMD.)

This is so important. A woman i care very much about didn’t go to hospital for her first heart attack - and was even fobbed off by her GP. It wasn’t till she had a second heart attack (with symptoms more in the classic male pattern of chest pains) a day or so later that she went to A&E. She’s fine now, but is very lucky that she’s alive and her heart isn’t permanently damaged.

So important.

The wording of this is a little misleading. They did initially send divers to investigate the wreck but found that it would be morally and physically challenging to raise that many bodies from the sea floor. The Estonia Agreement 1995, a treaty among Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Denmark, Russia and the United Kingdom, declared sanctity over the site, prohibiting its citizens from even approaching the wreck. They didn’t want people just going down there, disturbing the site, the bodies, and the evidence, so they made an agreement that made it so it is illegal to go down there. So the bodies weren’t just left there because it’s illegal to dive, it’s illegal to dive because the bodies are there. Big difference!

Sometimes I even wish I lived in the world without such things as “patriotism” and moreover, “nationalism” in whatever sense you take it. Because in most cases “patriotism” is used as a tool for manipulation. It is so evident that I wonder how people are still being hooked by it. It is especially clear here in Estonia, this small poor long-suffering country. This call to “national pride”, patriotic feelings and ~~shit~~ stuff like that is so exaggerated that it becomes almost grotesque. The state found perfect bait for the masses – the stress on severe moments of the past. But it goes too far, way too far. In the speeches of politics, in press, media, advertisements – everywhere you look you find this stress on so-called “patriotism”. And especially the emphasis on Soviet past and the sufferings and pains caused by it. They always remind you about it, they never miss the chance to add a couple of words on this topic.

Yes, all the oppression, deportations and other horrors of dictatorship ruined the lives of many people who lost their friends, relatives, families, homes etc.; yes, it might be considered a real tragedy for such a small country BUT so many years passed since then, it’s all over, long gone and, most importantly, it shouldn’t be reminded of every fucking day. But it is being reminded of. The internal policy here is based on manipulation through picking the old wounds of a nation. So I can bravely call my country sadomasochistic. The state presses where it hurts. It hurts there where people have painful memories about the past of their families; it hurts where the bitterness of injustice of the past is gone but not forgotten. So the state just pulls these strings of pain and of course, it receives reaction. All these mixed feelings of grief, loss, bad fortune and unfairness of the past arise in people a wish to find someone to blame and a wish to be “special”. Because “special” means special attitude. A reaction of a child who’s been hurt. “I was hurt, I felt terribly bad, I don’t care it’s all over, I want a reward, I’m a martyr now, you, you all owe me everything the best!” This kind of reaction is precisely what the government wants. This is how they awake your “patriotic feelings”. You are special , you are unique, you have suffered for so long but now the big daddy will care about you and won’t let anyone hurt you. Just don’t forget you’re different, special, you’re not like everyone else. They don’t understand, all these huge giants of wealth and success, they don’t know what it is like to be small, defenseless and oppressed. We have to show them, we have to shout as loud as we can that we are so different and unique, now we are free, we must pour out tons of pride, just look at us, they all must look at us.

And this game never ends. The folks swallow the bait of solemn and pathetic speeches, hypnotized by the phrases like “our unique culture”, “national heritage”, “age-old traditions”, the words like “nation”, “homeland”, “fatherland”, “roots”. But this pride is so artificially raised, so painstakingly propagated, screwed in to the brains of masses that it looks grotesque and insincere. The person who is really proud of his homeland will not yell about it, he won’t create himself some imaginary “enemy” to blame, he won’t demand special attitude and special attention towards himself. Balanced, harmonious person doesn’t need this. But the kind of “patriotism” cultivated here is not balanced. It is based on some kind of inferiority complex, on twisted and painful self-respect, on grudge and grievance. Guys, nothing good can come out of this. It is just not healthy.

I do feel sympathy to this nation because it really had been unfortunate for too long. So many centuries under the rule of foreigners (today these, tomorrow those), in the status of labor force having no rights. It hurts. It leaves traces. Huge bloody traces. And just when you think it’s all over, serfdom is abolished, you breathe again… bang! – the new occupations tearing the land apart, the war, then decades of dictatorship. I do really feel bad when I think about how cruel the history has been with Estonians. So it is natural that rehabilitation - not only political and economic, but also psychological may take longer, much longer than these 20 years. 8 centuries of oppression do not vanish without a trace; they will continue hurting this nation.

But the more often the authorities press where it hurts the longer this rehabilitation will take. They keep on itching and scratching the old wounds so that these wounds can never skin over. That’s cruel. That’s pure sadism. Why living in the past, counting all the insults and troubles? Think of the present, work for the future. Just don’t turn to dark moments of past so often - that will lead you to depression, hate and destruction. The wounds will heal only if you leave them in peace and let them heal. The sadistic state raises unhealthy wounded people with inadequate self-conceit. When will people finally understand this? When will they finally be fed up with this grotesque “patriotism”? Why the hell are they still being hooked by these cheap and brutal tricks? Fuck that, guys. That’s not healthy.

Folks, you’re finally free so stop being fucking sheep following stupid shepherds who don’t actually give a fuck about you. That’s not something to be proud of, common sense and clear brains are something to be proud of.
